In the Big Rock Singers, we want the focus to be on enjoyment and camaraderie in a musically rewarding atmosphere! Our choir members are busy folks with a variety of work, family, travel and other commitments. Singing in a choir is something our members do for fun and friendship, in addition to creating wonderful music together! Yes, effort and dedication are needed in order to create a performance product worthy of our devoted audience, BUT in the process, we laugh, smile and have a lot of FUN!
The Big Rock Singers became a registered Not-for-Profit Society in 2013. We humbly thank all of our current and past supporters. On January 17, 2018, the Big Rock Singers were granted Registered Canadian Charity status (Registration Number: 714024528RR0001).
The Big Rock Singers values the support we receive from our local community – both our loyal audience members and the community business partners who support our performances. We, in turn, are honoured to reciprocate by donating a sizable donation of our show ticket proceeds to local charity organizations.
Over Fifty Adult Voices of All Ages
The Big Rock Singers Community Choir has gone from a choir of a few people to a full choir of over fifty. This blossoming choir group was formed in 1990 by Lynda McLennan. After fifteen years Ms. McLennan retired and the Big Rock Singers were fortunate enough to have Carey Gruber take over the position of choir director.
Build Friendships, Take the Stress Out of Every Day Life
What a great way to get involved in the Foothills arts community! Each Wednesday the group gets together in Okotoks to sing, laugh and have fun. There are no auditions to join; just a love for singing; everyone is welcome to join.
Show Choir Excellence
Choir Director Carey Gruber, along with the amazing talents of our Creative Team, has been the driving force in the choir’s metamorphosis. Over the past twelve years, the choir repertoire has broadened and includes all styles of music. Costumes, props, stage and lights are hallmarks of the choir's performances.
Something for Everyone
The Big Rock Singers blend the big vocal sound of choir with all types of music - Broadway, Jazz, Swing, Pop, Rock and Roll, as well as traditional and contemporary Christmas music. Performances have moved from smaller venues such as the Performing Arts Centre to filling the Foothills Centennial Centre twice a year.
The Big Rock Singers and special guests continue to maintain a high level of entertainment each spring, filling the Foothills Centennial Centre to capacity and creating an event to remember. They bring their talents to the stage with a little bit of acting, a little bit of dancing, and a whole lot of great singing as they dazzle the audience time and time again. Every fall session, The Big Rock Singers participate in the Remembrance Day Ceremony in Okotoks. They also perform at locations throughout the Foothills including: the Sandstone Lodge in Okotoks, Medicine Tree Manor in High River, Tudor Manor in Okotoks, Heartland in Okotoks, Heritage Park, Spruce Meadows, Christmas Market, Light Up Okotoks, and Calgary Zoo Lights during the Christmas Season.
Every show is a collaborative event including talent of all ages from all over the Foothills and Calgary area.
The Big Rock Singers are a Non-Profit Society
Money raised through ticket and concession sales, and from the generosity of local business and corporate sponsors is used to cover the costs of music purchases, musicians, venue rentals, props, costumes, lighting and sound. A small fee is charged each year for choir members to join, and performance tickets are always kept affordable so that everyone in the community can participate.
Advertising and Publicity
Each season an advertising campaign appears in local newspapers, radio, various websites that advertise local events, and outdoor signage in the Okotoks area. Sponsors also have the opportunity to be showcased through performance pageantry, multimedia presentations and Master of Ceremonies acknowledgment.
The Big Rock Singers Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is an integral part of the success of this group of music enthusiasts. They meet several times throughout the year to plan upcoming events and to manage the "business" of the choir including recruitment, fund-raising, advertising and promotion of the choir. This group of individuals works very hard behind the scenes to ensure the success of each performance, and the well-being of each choir member.
