Q: Can anyone join?

A: Absolutely! We are a non-audition adult (ages 18+) community choir. All you need to do is be able to match pitch (sing the same note as your neighbour) and commit to rehearsals. We have a wide variety of members including accomplished musicians and singers, members who do not read music and those whose only experience prior to joining was singing in the shower. The Big Rock Singers will provide lots of encouragement and support along with hints and tips from our Director about good singing habits. After just a few rehearsals, your confidence will soar with how easy it is!

 

 

Q: When and where do you rehearse?

A: We rehearse every Wednesday evening at United Church in Okotoks. In the Fall season (September to first week of December), we rehearse from 7:00-9:30pm. In the Spring season (January to first week of May) we have two groups, depending on the amount of music and movement you want to enjoy! Our “Concert Choir” rehearses from 7:00-8:30pm and our “Show Choir” from 7:00-10:00pm. In the Spring we also rehearse 2-3 times on Saturdays when we are nearing our show date. Folks quite often get together weekly with other members of their singing section on Monday evenings to practice – participation in this is optional, but really fun and a great way to make new friends!

 

 

Q: What are the performance dates?

A: Our 2019-20 performances will be at the Okotoks Foothills Centennial Centre in Okotoks as follows:

  • Christmas: We will be performing two shows on Saturday (Dec 7).
  • Spring: We will be performing two shows on Saturday (May 2).

 

 

Q: Can I come and try first?

A: Yes. We have a “tire kick” policy for our first rehearsal of the season; first rehearsal of every season. Come check us out. A fun loving gang of singers will welcome you with open arms. There is no obligation to join, but we know you will love it as much as we do!

 

 

Q: What is the 'Volunteerism Buy-Out Option'?

A: The Big Rock Singers society survives based upon participation and volunteering of our members.  Without this participation the society simply could not exist.  However, we understand that each of our members cannot contribute in the same way or to the same extent each season.  To accommodate this variety and for fairness to all members, we have created a buy-out option that sets a monetary value on what the volunteer actions can mean to the society.  The buy-out option allows a member to not be required to participate in the following:

  • all forms of mandatory member fundraising participation activities including, but not limited to, selling of raffle tickets
  • bake sales (pies/baked goods)
  • rehearsal venue set-up and tear down
  • performance venue set-up and tear down
  • performance related committees of any kind
  • active roles in operational committees
  • Board of Directors roles
  • Committee Directors roles

 

 

Q: What are my Volunteer Buy-Out Payment Options?

A: When a member selects the Buy-Out option on their registration form, payment can be online, by cheque or by ATB Cares donation to Big Rock Singers.  It can be paid online via credit card in full, or it can be paid by cheque at the beginning of each season.  If selected, the Buy-Out is required to be paid 100% in advance.

 

 

Q: Can I pay the Volunteer Buy Out through ATB Cares via donation in full?

A: You have the flexibility to us the link to ATB Cares donate to Big Rick Singers button to make your Volunteer Buy-Out option payment.  If you use this method, it will further assist Big Rock Singers through a matching ATB 15% donation and it will provide you with a tax receipt for your payment. Big Rock Singers would get a 15% additional contribution (so your $500 becomes $575).  The advantage to the member through this payment method is a tax receipt, the advantage to the choir is increased funds.

 

 

Q: How much does it cost?

A: You can pay for a single season or for both seasons. Check out the fees on our Registration page. Once paid, all fees are strictly non-refundable.

 

Q: Is there financial assistance?

A: The Big Rock Singers is a community choir open to all adults who love to sing! To reduce barriers to joining our choir due to financial circumstance, there are a number of financial assistance options available. All such requests are confidential. Please email through the Contact Us on the website for further information.

 

Q: What is your withdrawal and refund policy?

A: We have a strict policy on refunds as we make plans and financial commitments based on paying members. Once you have paid, there is no refund if you withdraw.

 

Q: What else do I need to know?

A:  If you attend rehearsals and spend time learning in between rehearsals you will find it easy to memorize the music! We put all the practice tools into the hands of our singers by providing part recordings of our songs. It is an amazing experience to sing “off book”. Singing “off book” allows us to introduce exciting movement and choreography for the audience.  Our directors design age-and-stage appropriate choreography for our performances. For our Christmas performances, we have limited movement and choreography. In our Spring performance, we do a lot more, but you can decide how much you get involved based on your comfort level.  You will also have to budget for costumes. The Big Rock Singers provide you with lots of support and guidance on ways to create amazing economical costumes.
